Iridium or not? |
Lead | |
|
I have heard mixed things about iridium spark plugs in a GP. I currently have NKG Iridium plugs and am wondering if I should go back to a copper, or even
platnum core. Any thoughts?

Here's what I think. If you are stock, then use the NGK IX's. If you have a basic 3.4" pulley, then use the copper autolites. Reason being, the
iridiums are good for low boosted applications, we have 6-8lbs stock. Once you start being modded and pushing the 10-12# limits the iridiums might not be your
best bet b/c you can not gap them. The tip is too fragile and will break if you try to gap them. They are also not as cold of a plug. They might be a more
technologically advanced plug, but I don't know if I would trust it as a better heat extractor than a colder plug. Have a read here and make up your own
mind though;

Thanks man. I'll probably stick with the IX only because the car is practically stock.

I've always been a copper plug man myself. when I do spark plug changes, I also do a compression check to monitor engine wear and potential problems.
If I were to run iridiums or platinums they are supposed to be changed 60-100,000 miles depending on manufacturer and such. Since I run coppers, I replace them every 30,000 miles and it forces me to check my engine more often.

copper's.......iridiums and platinums retain heat.......if youre stock i'd still go get some autolite 605s(one heat range colder than
stock).......thats just me....

stockboy wrote: Iridium & Platinum are the same thing in the automotive world. True platinum is not used on any plugs from any brand, they all use Iridium cause it is stable in our uses and holds together in which Platinum will not cause it becomes brittle. The Iridium is from the same family as Platinum and looks pretty much identical to it. Its just the physical properties thats makes them different. But since you are stock do like everyone said choose the ones they
recommend.
