Transmission Problems.... YAY!!! |
Lead | |
|
Well... so i go on my senior trip, and when i get back, my parents inform me that they drove my car and now it has tranny problems!... cant really blame them
tho, it was bound to happen sometime... but they said they would pay for it, so im not to mad... just the time i will have not driving it.... but here is the
problem... when the car is in drive, 2nd or 1st, it will SLOWLY accelerate, no matter how much gas i give it. It is very sluggish and non responsive with quick
taps of the pedal... i dont know too much about transmissions, but would that sound like the torque converter? It doesn't slip then grab, it just seems
like no power is getting from the engine to the transmission, yet it still accelerates smoothly, just very slowly... any ideas?

Sounds like it's not in 1st at all. I wonder if it's a solenoid problem. Check out Triple Edge Performance. He has a ton of help tips on his site.

Better yet just have your parents get a Triple edge tranny.
It will be cheaper then the rebuilt ones that your parents might think of getting. Better
performance and you save them money. Everybody wins!!

it sent 6 codes:
P0753: Gear 5 Ratio Incorrect P0758: Shift Solenoid B Circuit Electrical P1860:
DTC P1860 is a type "A" DTC and indicates a torque convertor clutch pulse width modulation solenoid electrical problem. When set it disables shift adapts and inhibits TCC functions such as the lock/unlock when in 4th-OD. Possible flaky
TCC-PWM solenoid. (link here)
P0753 P: \ P0758 P: - These i couldn't find... but im assuming they are the same... P1860 P: / So solenoid problem? now how can i A: check this, and B: Fix it...?

You need to talk to Dave at Triple Edge to see what he says. I would just get the trans since mom and dad want to pay for it and those summer deals are great
timing.

well... i conducted a stall test, and i was able to reach ~2700rpm... which is higher than what its suppose to be, right?... on zzp it says a 2500 stall is a
step higher than stock, so looking at my stall test i would say my tranny is slipping... man were not made of money, so i was looking for the least expensive
way of fixing this, but now its starting to look like a rebuild... could a sensor cause this? something tells me no, but im still looking for the cheapest
possibility... anywho thanks for the help

Best thing any of us can tell you is to talk to Dave at TripleEdgePerformance. Ho would be able to tell you and ask you the right questions for finding out
what is wrong.

Ok, time for an update... I had it towed to Waterloo transmissions where they diagnosed it with a busted clutch and wanted 2300$ for a stock replacement and
3200$ for a "road ripper" transmission... more money than i wanted to spend, and i didnt trust there diagnosis... They had performed some 3 step
process where they check the electrical, mechanical, and oil flow... they said everything electrical was fine, keep that in mind... so i called Dave at Triple
Edge performance and he said it sounds like more of an electrical problem and told me to check my fuses, so we had the car towed to another more reliable
place (family friends) and there i checked my TCC fuse, and it was blown... So i replaced it with one of the spares, started the car and no help, rechecked the
fuse and it had blown again... so i know there is def an electrical problem (short some where) which completely contradicts Waterloo's findings (which cost
160$) So i was researching last night and found this...
""Some customers may comment on an SES/TCS tell-tale light illuminated, the transmission slipping in 4th gear, or the transmission stuck in second gear. DTCs P0753, P0758, P1860, C1223, C1224 or C1275 may be set. There are 2 separate causes that may create the above conditions. Both should be examined when a vehicle is brought in for the above concern. • Cause #1 is possible water intrusion at the transmission to front end vehicle harness. This harness located near the transmission breakout is protected by plastic split tube type conduit and electrical tape. In some cases, the split may be facing upward which will increase the tendency of the conduit to hold water. Eventually, the #107 splice to the transmission may become corroded and become non-conductive. • Cause #2 can be quickly identified by a visual inspection under the vehicle at the passenger side of the rear axle. The Evaporative Emissions Canister Vent Solenoid retainer may have come loose allowing the associated wire harness to contact the rear axle. Abrasion of the wire against the rear axle may rub through the insulation creating a short."" http://www.j-body.org/forums/read.php?f=41&i=38310&t=37322 The whole problem started when my dad took it through a car wash when i was on vacation... he said as soon as the water hit the car the SES light came on... (too much similar imo)... so hopefully this checks out.. i hate transmission places around here...

Something else for you to look into and I suggest this to anyone having known electrical problems-blown fuse obviously tells you that you do- check the wiring
harness under the airbox. There is an ac-accumulator and the metal lines that go to it directly under the air box and the main harness that comes off of the
pcm routes directly through this area. I have seen before where the loom is rubbed through and wires short out on the metal tube which can cause a nightmare
of problems! Sometimes this requires peeling a lot of loom off and disecting the harness a bit. Unplugging the pcm and trans connector and using an ohm meter
between the pcm and all trans wires helps verify they are good, and also an ohm meter (battery unhooked) between the 12V solenoid feed at trans and the fuse
for it in the fuse block AND also check this to ground to verify the short. I dont recall the year of your car but I dont know believe there is anything else
on the fuse that goes to the trans like in the bulletin you found but I will check a few years and post back.

I just looked at some wiring schematics and the only thing on the underhood TCC fuse are the two shift solenoids, the tcc solenoid, and then a seperate wire
that runs into the car which that goes to the brake pedal switch and then back out to the pcm to watch the voltage switch on and off for TCC operation so the
tcc solenoid is dissabled while your foot is on the brake.

Hey thanks a lot Dave, i have yet to check that out, but thanks for more info on it... i havent heard back from the transmission place, but next time I go,
I'll definitely have to take a look...

Something else you can try that will rule out an internal trans problem is unplug the trans connector on top of the trans case then install a new fuse and turn
the key on and see if it blows. If it blows then you know the problem is a short in the wiring, if it doesnt blow then it is internal. A shorted solenoid can
cause this problem and if you want to dig into it yourself and have an ohm meter I can help you out with wiring and what to check out.

Thats a great idea for checking the other things by unplugging the plug on top of the trans.

Well its fixed... the problem was the intercooler pump....
sooo.... apparently my intercooler pump shorted and blew the TCC fuse and caused my solenoids to stop working... we followed all the instructions on how to install the intercooler, man i feel like a complete idiot... i didnt notice the pump not working when i went to go see what the transmission was doing... i was more like transmission problems, well screw that!!!... i could have done this with Dave and you guys for free and not paying bad people to tell me i need a new tranny... Hey Troy, u still have that extra intercooler pump?... i havent taken a good look at mine yet, but they way things are looking now ill prob need another one... anywho thanks for the help!

Wow good find! At least it wasnt in your trans and I had a strong feeling it wasnt. That just goes to show you and just as you found, there are a lot of
crooks out there that want your money and not help you. They would have put a new trans in the car and then told you that you had electrical problems and
still charged for it even though it wasnt your problem. I think the big issue with the intercooler installs is that the instructions tell you to splice in to
any pink wire with no recommendations to which one AND they do not include a fuse or relay with the kits which would have saved your butt!
